For several months after the last Lok Sabha elections, the municipality had stopped paying their salaries. Adhir Chowdhury has written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee multiple times regarding this matter.
Many municipalities across West Bengal, especially those controlled by opposition parties (Congress, Left Front, BJP), have repeatedly alleged that the state government withholds or delays release of funds, making it impossible for them to pay salaries to employees. This has been a long-standing political flashpoint, with opposition-ruled municipalities accusing the TMC government of financial discrimination.
